Gracyn Gregg has 233 kills through 26 games. The Poway High senior is doing it at 5-foot-7.
The outside hitter and team captain leads the Titans in kills by a wide margin as Poway carries a seven-match winning streak and a 17-9 overall record into Palomar League play, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune's Steve Brand. The Titans are 2-0 in league, trailing only Fallbrook (3-0) in the MaxPreps standings as of Wednesday, Sept. 30.
Gregg's 233 kills nearly double the 139 posted by 6-foot-1 junior Audrey Christensen, who ranks second on the team. Gregg has converted at a 32.4 kill percentage across 68 sets.
At 5-foot-7, Gregg stands well below the 7-foot-4 net. She told the Union-Tribune she relies on placement over power.
"I'm undersized for an outside hitter … so I try to find spots where I can place the ball," Gregg said. "I try to use the other side's wall and tactics to my advantage."
Head coach Breezy Ambort, a former University City High standout now in her 15th season leading the Titans, said Gregg's all-around game sets her apart. Ambort told the Union-Tribune that Gregg is fundamentally sound, a strong defender and an outside hitter who finds ways to score without blasting the ball.
Gregg's path to varsity started early. As a freshman, she earned JV Most Valuable Player honors before getting called up to varsity for the playoffs, where she started two matches. She said the jump from JV to varsity was nerve-wracking but gave her the confidence to step into a leadership role the following season.
She grew up watching her mother, Jennifer Adams, play volleyball. Gregg played soccer as a youngster before switching to volleyball in middle school. She joined the San Diego Volleyball Club and in 2026 moved to the San Diego Wave club program.
Ambort, who played college volleyball at Clemson, is only the third Poway head coach since 1980, according to the program's website. The program has won 11 CIF titles in its history, including back-to-back Division 1 CIF Championships in 2012 and 2013 under Ambort.
The Titans' nine losses this season tell a story of their own. Seven came against teams outside the San Diego Section. The only in-section defeats were to Mission Vista and Patrick Henry in tournament play.
The revamped Palomar League looks different this fall. Fallbrook, El Camino, Canyon Crest Academy and Rancho Buena Vista joined, while La Costa Canyon, Mt. Carmel, Mission Hills and Oceanside departed. Gregg told the Union-Tribune the team is focused on winning the league title before turning to the Division 2 playoffs.
Poway hosts Fallbrook on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m., then travels to El Camino on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 6 p.m.
