Sixth-ranked Rancho Bernardo routed El Camino 45-17 on Friday, Oct. 9, improving to 2-0 in Avocado East League play and 6-1 overall.

Del Norte had a rougher night. The Nighthawks fell 38-7 to No. 10 Oceanside, dropping to 0-2 in league and 4-3 on the season.

Both results carry weight in a league that Del Norte coach Nick Barnett called "the toughest in the section" during a preseason interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune in July.

Broncos keep rolling

The 45-17 margin was the largest of Rancho Bernardo's league wins so far. The Broncos opened Avocado East play with a 33-21 victory over Del Norte on Saturday, Oct. 3, a game in which junior quarterback Gaige Weddle threw for 135 yards and rushed for 168, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Running back Aiden Farrell added 125 rushing yards and three touchdowns in that contest.

Individual stats from the El Camino game were not available at publication.

Coach Eric Weddle, now in his fourth year leading the program, entered the season with a 24-12 record and stated goals of winning the Avocado East title and the program's first section championship. Two league games in, the Broncos are on pace.

"We're just looking to improve every year … We are looking for an Avo East title and our first section championship," Weddle said in an August preview with the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Farrell, a transfer from La Jolla who rushed for 1,194 yards as a sophomore there in 2025, and receiver Brody Cella, one of nine returning All-Avocado East players, have been key pieces of the Broncos' offense through seven games.

Nighthawks fall to 0-2

Del Norte entered the season with high expectations under fourth-year coach Nick Barnett, who led the Nighthawks to a Division 2 section title in 2023. Senior quarterback Kaden Williams, wide receiver Riley Farroki and running back Maddox Romans anchor an offense known as the "Flight Crew."

The 38-7 loss to Oceanside marked the second straight lopsided league defeat for Del Norte. Greyson Ikeda-Fike's 90-yard touchdown run was a bright spot in the Nighthawks' 33-21 loss to Rancho Bernardo on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Del Norte sits at 0-2 in league play with a 4-3 overall record.

Westview rolls in nonleague play

Westview posted the area's most dominant score of the night, beating Escondido 70-14 in a nonleague matchup, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune's scores roundup.
