Al Jardine, the 84-year-old co-founder of the Beach Boys, will perform at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m. It is his first concert in Poway.
Jardine and his 10-member Pet Sounds Band will play a two-part setlist spanning Beach Boys classics and deeper album cuts, as first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune. The first half covers the surfing-era hits: "Help Me, Rhonda," "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "I Get Around." The second half turns to the 1966 album "Pet Sounds," which marks its 60th anniversary this year, and the 1977 album "The Beach Boys Love You."
Jardine told the Union-Tribune that the 1977 album flew under the radar until music director Darian Sahanaja urged him to perform it live. "Sure enough last year (concertgoers) were screaming their hearts out," he said.
The Pet Sounds Band is Brian Wilson's former touring group. Jardine has led the band since January 2025, with Sahanaja as music director and Jardine's son Matt on vocals, according to Jardine's website. The lineup also includes drummer Michael D'Amico, bassist Bob Lizik, pianist Gary Griffin, guitarist Rob Bonfiglio, horn player Paul Von Mertens and keyboardist Debbie Shair.
Jardine co-founded the Beach Boys with Brian Wilson in 1961 after the two met at Hawthorne High School and reconnected in college. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the group in 1988 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. He served mostly as the band's rhythm guitarist and harmony vocalist, and sang lead on tracks including "Help Me, Rhonda."
A new song could also make its Poway debut. Jardine said he plans to release a six-song album called "Islands in the Sun" in 2027. He released a four-song EP by the same name in May 2025, featuring guest appearances from Neil Young, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and fellow Beach Boy Bruce Johnston, according to Rock Cellar Magazine. Whether the new track makes the setlist depends on rehearsals. "We are still rehearsing it. It's a positive, happy song," Jardine told the Union-Tribune.
Sharlene O'Keefe, executive director of Poway OnStage, the nonprofit that books artists into the city-owned venue, said the concert offers audiences a chance to hear Beach Boys music from someone who helped create it.
Tickets range from $78 to $98 for adults, $68 to $85 for seniors 65 and older, active military and students ages 13 to 21, and $44 to $54 for children 12 and under, according to the Poway OnStage event page. A $9 handling and facilities restoration fee is included in the price. Tickets are available at PowayOnStage.org or by calling 858-668-4696. The box office at 15498 Espola Road is open 1 to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
