UVAS Winery in Old Poway earned five wine competition ribbons this year and is hosting three Halloween events later this month, as first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The Zaldivar family's winery at 14053 Midland Road won a silver and a bronze at the San Diego County Fair and three silvers at the Grape Day Wine Competition in Escondido.
The Halloween lineup begins Saturday, Oct. 24, with cookie decorating and candy for kids on a haunted-themed patio, timed with Old Poway Park's annual "Once Upon a Hallowe'en." A Witch's Brew Tea Party follows Sunday, Oct. 25, featuring appetizers, teas and wines. The series closes with a costume contest on Saturday, Oct. 31. About 40 people attended last year's costume party, co-owner Alishia Zaldivar told the Union-Tribune.
UVAS opened March 24, 2025, after the Zaldivars purchased the former Mission Cellars business at the same site. Zaldivar's son, Tristian Zaldivar, trained under the previous owners starting in 2021.
The winery is open 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and Sunday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.
