Poway is under a high wind warning through Saturday evening as two brush fires near Camp Pendleton shut down Interstate 5 in both directions Friday, Oct. 16.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warning covers Poway and other San Diego County valley communities until 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, according to Fox 5 San Diego. Eastern valley areas could see gusts between 45 and 55 mph. Near mountain foothills, gusts could reach 70 mph. Winds could down trees and power lines, and power outages are possible, the NWS said.

A vehicle on a semi-truck hauler caught fire around 11 a.m. Friday south of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) freeway checkpoint near San Onofre, the San Diego Union-Tribune first reported. Flames spread to nearby brush. CHP closed I-5 between Vandergrift Boulevard and Basilone Road. NBC 7 San Diego described the blaze differently, calling it a spot fire from the Henderson fire.

Cal Fire reported the blaze at 3 acres by noon, according to the Union-Tribune. It grew to 20 acres, NBC 7 reported.

State parks officials evacuated campers at the San Onofre beach campground. Amtrak Pacific Surfliner service was suspended, and the train tracks between Orange County and San Diego were shut down, NBC 7 reported.

The San Onofre fire erupted near the Henderson fire, which started around 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, on Camp Pendleton. A Cal Fire incident update at 6:14 a.m. Friday listed the Henderson fire at 1,404 acres and 0% containment. By Friday afternoon, the blaze had scorched more than 2,000 acres with zero containment, according to the Union-Tribune.

Around 11 a.m. Friday, Cal Fire said the Henderson fire remained active, with fire crossing containment lines on the northwest side, the Union-Tribune reported. Air and ground resources were engaged in suppression efforts with additional crews en route. Some Henderson fire crews were reassigned to the new San Onofre blaze, Cal Fire said.

Camp Pendleton set up a temporary evacuation control center at Paige Field House to shelter Marines and sailors displaced from the Las Flores area, according to NBC 7. The Camp Pendleton Fire Department was working with Cal Fire and other agencies on the Henderson fire.

CHP Oceanside posted on X that the northbound I-5 closure was in effect at Vandergrift Boulevard, warning of heavy smoke and reduced visibility.

NWS meteorologist Miguel Miller told the Union-Tribune that firefighters on the San Onofre fire faced 95-degree heat with 25-mph gusts pushing flames southwest. Near the Henderson fire, gusts reached 44 mph.

"It's going to be a slow and gradual decrease, and the wind is still going to be blowing pretty good all evening and all night," Miller said.

The San Diego County Air Pollution Control District issued a smoke advisory for communities in South Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista, NBC 7 reported. The Henderson fire's cause remains under investigation, according to Cal Fire. Cal Fire posts incident updates at fire.ca.gov.
